Fused Glass

Fused glass is made by layering murano glass, often starting with clear cristallo glass on the base then the design is sandwiched in the centre using individually hand cut coloured Murano glass, with Avventurina crystals, dichroic glass or gold and silver powders, finishing with another layer of clear glass on top of the design. These are then fired at around 795 degrees fully fusing together, resulting in beautiful jewel like pieces

Article in Rochford Life Spring 2011

At the end of February, JJW Designs launched a small extension of their main shop, blending the traditional with up-to-date and vintage style collections, using freshwater pearls and sparkling swarovski crystals together with Murano glass and sterling silver.

Rochford life is all about personal contact so we went to see for ourselves – When we first interviewed Julie and Diane, we were almost overwhelmed by the beauty of the shop and its wares – glass, glass and more glass, and lighting that completely takes you by surprise in the olde worlde buildings of West Street….Rochford

We had already been won over by the style of beautiful and unusual glass jewellery and the new room only enhances the range for potential customers.

This sort of jewellery is rarely found on the high street. Julie and Diane regularly visit Venice to see the local work and talk with their counterparts working with Murano glass in its home locality. They tell me they have just returned from such a trip and will be expecting new pieces to arrive from there within a few weeks, to be added to the existing stock, as well as the glass to work with. It will be interesting to see the new pieces when they arrive.

Julie White graduate of Southend school of art and design had always dreamed of owning her own studio.

Two years ago Julie took over the pottery business where she had been working part time.

A few months down the line and a chance to enrol on a glass jewellery making course came up and she took it. Mia Elizabeth was born and, along with her pottery studio, Craft Cottage, there was no looking back.

Using Murano glass, which is sourced from Venice, Julie and her team make jewellery pieces by hand. The designs are contemporary and because Murano glass is transparent it results in a beautiful finish.

Every piece produced by the artist is unique and personal to the wearer, popular for weddings, proms, and special  occasions. Colours can be matched by Bride or Brides mother to suit a particular colour theme and include necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

There is between a two and four week turn around for items specially made but stock items are also available.

The past two years have been busy for Julie but her enthusiasm and dedication have made it worthwhile.

She said: The business has grown very quickly and I am thankful for the support of my team.
